Alban Gerhardt, German cellist

Born in 1969 in Berlin, Alban Gerhardt started both his piano- and cello studies at the age of 7 with tutors W.Saschowa and M.Nyikos. He was early recognized as one of the most promising young talents in both instruments, finally opting for the cello as /his/ instrument.

He continued his studies in Berlin and in Cincinnati, USA, with the LaSalle and Tokyo String Quartets as well as in Cologne with Boris Pergamenschikow. He also received important encouragement from Arto Noras, Paul Tortelier, and Heinrich Schiff. In the meantime he is making many radio-recordings and a first CD solo-recital recording.

As soloist, Alban Gerhardt has recently appeared with a.o. the Hamburger Philharmoniker and Symphoniker, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, the Shinsei Nihon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Orchestre de Chambre Montreal and the Radio Orchestra of Baden-Baden.

In October 1991 he made his highly acclaimed debut with Berliner Philharmoniker in the Philharmonie Berlin, playing Tchaikowsky/s -Rococo-Variotions- conducted by Semyon Bychkov.

Active in the chamber music field, he has given chambermusic concerts with a.o. Boris Pergamenschikow and Frank Peter Zimmermann.

Alban Gerhardt plays a Lorenzo Guadagnini cello from 1741.

Face & Part

Goodbye dearest Alison!
I'm really gonna miss you...
